Podcast Club: Navigating Change

Thursday September 16 2021

Like a book club, but for podcasts!

Every month we listen to a curated list of podcast episodes on a particular topic or theme and then we meet to discuss them. It’s the perfect discussion for time-starved folks. No long books to read! Listen to the podcasts while you commute, do chores or go for a walk. Listening to podcasts is such a great way to learn something new and then further reinforce that knowledge by discussing with others.

If you’ve never listened to podcasts before and want to learn, call the library at 250-352-6333 to book an (online) appointment with one of our librarians.

To register, email hgoldik@nelson.ca (NOTE: Will be held in person at the Library except if COVID requires the event to be on Zoom)

Our September Theme is Navigating Change

Podcast: LIFE KIT

  • Episode: A Behavioral Scientist’s Advice For Changing Your Life May 18, 2021 (19 minutes)
  • When’s the best time to start a new habit? And what makes some stick while others fall by the wayside? Behavioral scientist Katy Milkman breaks down the research about how to leverage human nature instead of working against it to achieve your goals.

Podcast: Freakonomics

  • Episode: How to Change Your Mind  May 29, 2019 (46 minutes)
  • There are a lot of barriers to changing your mind: ego, overconfidence, inertia — and cost. Politicians who flip-flop get mocked; family and friends who cross tribal borders are shunned. But shouldn’t we be encouraging people to change their minds? And how can we get better at it ourselves?

Podcast: Hello Monday with Jessi Hempel

  • Episode: Mastering Change with Author Bruce Feiler  July 13, 2020 (25 minutes)
  • Unexpected change can feel disorienting, but according to author Bruce Feiler, navigating through is also a huge opportunity for growth.

Podcast: A Slight Change of Plans

  • Episode: A Black Musician Takes on the KKK May 19, 2021 (36 minutes)
  • When a Black jazz musician meets a Klansman at a bar, his life takes a sudden turn. He ends up inspiring hundreds of people to leave white supremacist groups.
