Library Takeout @ NPL


We are offering Library Takeout @ NPL  to provide physical items to complement our online offerings to the community during this crucial time. This is a call/click and collect service where you can submit orders for library materials, have orders fulfilled by library staff, and pick up takeout orders.

To reduce the number of visits to the library, we are encouraging you to take out enough material to get you and your family through a few weeks, and so require you to have a minimum of items ordered.



  1. Browse our online catalogue to find out what is available and at the library.
    Hint: Note that there are filters for searching available items–you can see this at the top left. Make sure to select Available Now (and unselect other options) to see items that are in the NPL library available for Library Takeout.
  2. Use our online form HERE, place a hold on an available item you want or call us at 250-352-6333 (M-S 10-6) to get us a list of books you want to read. Minimum orders: 5 Adult/Teen items; 15 Children’s items
  3. NPL staff will find these for you and call you back to arrange a pickup time. To ensure the health and safety of staff and participating patrons, pick-up times will be by appointment only. Try scheduling your pickup times to coincide with a trip to the grocery store or other essential location!
  4. Pick-up your items at your scheduled pickup time.
  5. Enjoy your materials!



What can I borrow?

You can request any items from our collections that are available for lending including:

  • Books in all formats
  • DVDs and Blu-Rays
  • Audiobooks
  • Playaways
  • CDs
  • Magazines

How do I place an order?

For the best experience with Library Takeout, talk to us by phone at 250-352-6333 (M-S 10-6) so that we know what you need. Because we may not have exactly what you want on hand, it will be easier to discuss your order and suggest alternatives if necessary.

We also need to discuss instructions to ensure your visit to the pickup area will be smooth and safe.

However, if you know what you would like and know it is available, you can fill out a holds request from our online catalogue and our staff will contact you with next steps. We will do our best to respond within 24 hours.

What are your hours for the Library Takeout Service?

Starting Monday, May 11th, we are available to take your orders by phone, using the online Library Takeout order form or by email from Monday to Saturday at 10 am – 6 pm.

Pickup appointments will be scheduled in 30-minute increments Monday to Saturday between 11 am and 2 pm. For everyone’s safety, we ask that you do your best to be on time to help us limit the number of people in the pickup area.

If current service hours do not work for you, let us know when we call to schedule your appointment. We’ll see what we can accommodate. Your feedback can help us adjust our service hours to meet the needs of our community.

How does Library Takeout impact Holds pick-up service?

If you have have holds from before the closure on the holds shelf, you can call staff to schedule an appointment for pick-up.

Note that Library Takeout orders must be at least 5 adult/teen books or 15 kids books. When you call to schedule your holds pickup, have a few titles in mind to add to your order.

If you have items you are waiting for on your holds list, please note that we are not requiring people to bring items back to the library right now. Library Takeout offers a way to order items that are sitting in our building. Most items with long waiting lists are currently checked out to other patrons.

Note: when we receive your order, it will be quarantined for 3 days before your appointment.

Is it safe to borrow library materials during the COVID-19 outbreak?

Working with approval from local health authorities and the City of Nelson Emergency Operations Center, we are taking all precautions to ensure that materials on our shelves and those that are returned to us are safe to be handled by members of the public. Any returned items are not being handled for the recommended period of 72 hours.

To pick up an order, you’ll need to arrange a time with staff. Under current restrictions and to keep this service safe, we will be limiting the number of appointments per half-hour pickup windows. Signage will guide you to the place where you can show something with your name on it to staff through the window, and to help you maintain a safe distance from others. If you see others picking up their order, please wait on one of the 2 metre Physical Distancing markers until it is safe to proceed towards the door. Only one person is permitted in the pick-up area at a time.

If you are feeling unwell or if any member of your household is sick or in isolation, we ask that you refrain from borrowing library materials. This will help us all feel more comfortable and confident with the safety of our collections.  We’ll look forward to serving you again when everyone in your household is healthy.

How long can I borrow the items I place on order?

As part of our Library Takeout service, we are extending loan periods to give you more time to enjoy your materials and reduce the number of trips you need to make to the library to return materials. All due dates have been extended to double our normal loan period – 6 weeks!

Can I return items to the library?

Yes! Our book drop is still open, but only Monday to Saturday 10am-6pm (the lobby area will be locked outside of those times). For materials that are returned, we are taking precautions to ensure that our collections are safe to be handled by members of the public and our staff. If you prefer to return them to the library and you are able to venture out safely, you can put them in a book drop at the library.

Note: As a result of our current procedure of placing returned items under 3 day quarantine, it will take a few days for items to come off your library account. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.

Is there a way for me to support the library during COVID-19?

Yes! We have our 100th birthday celebration canvas book bags, posters and cards available for purchase (see here). We also have our library cookbook Pairings, inspired food inspiring words which is a compendium of beloved recipes and books from the chefs of Nelson. When you place your library takeout order you can add any of these items as a way to support your library.

Do you know when the library is going to open again?

While we hope that it won’t be too long, we’re staying closed to help limit the spread of COVID-19 in our community. We are following the advice of the health authorities and will reopen after careful consideration following a recommendation from the health authority.
