Stitches: An Indigenous Book Club

Wednesday December 11 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Traditional Indigenous crafts have a magic to them because they have the ability to carry tradition, culture and identity. To get to know an Indigenous craft, is to get to know a nation. To that end, the Nelson Public Library is hosting a unique book club called Stitches run by educator Lesley Garlow starting in December. Over four meetings, the Stitches Book Club will offer a facilitated discussion around two books, while also demonstrating and giving the opportunity to practice some of the crafts discussed.

The two books participants are invited to read include a collection of oral tales by Sinixt weaver Julie A. Edwards (Weaving: Baskets and Stories) and a memoir by Metis beader Gregory Schofield (Thunder in my Veins). Copies of the books can be found at the front desk anytime the library is open.

Stitches Book Club is a free program that meets on December 4th and 11th; January 8th and 22nd, 7-8:30pm. Although registration is preferred (email mstorey@nelson.ca to register), people are invited to come as they are able to. No crafting experience is necessary.
